Bristol Road · B29

Acute otitis media (middle ear infection) is one of the most common reasons children are taken to the GP. The NHS Pharmacy First scheme means it is one of the things we can now help with directly, in your local pharmacy.

Living in B29 with a poorly child and unable to get a GP appointment? Pharmacy First means a pharmacist with an otoscope can see them today. Selly Pharmacy is right on Bristol Road, two minutes from Selly Oak station, with a private consultation room suitable for children.

Who is eligible?

The NHS Pharmacy First ear infection service is for:

  • Children aged 1 year up to 17 years.
  • With symptoms suggesting acute otitis media (middle ear infection).
  • Who do not have signs of more serious infection requiring urgent care.

What we will do

The consultation is in our private room and takes around 15 minutes.

We take a brief history, examine the child, and look in their ear with an otoscope. Based on what we find and how unwell the child is, we either reassure and recommend self-care, or prescribe a short course of antibiotics on the spot.

Self-care advice

Most ear infections clear up on their own within a few days. Helpful measures include:

  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain (at age-appropriate doses).
  • A warm, but not hot, compress against the ear.
  • Plenty of fluids and rest.
  • Avoiding inserting anything into the ear (cotton buds, drops not prescribed).

When to seek urgent care

Please call 111, see your GP urgently, or go to A&E — not the pharmacy — if your child has:

  • Severe pain that does not respond to painkillers.
  • A very high temperature, especially with rash or stiff neck.
  • Drowsiness, confusion, or unusual irritability.
  • Discharge of fluid or blood from the ear.
  • Symptoms that have been present for more than a week without any improvement.

To book or ask a question, call 0121 472 0155. Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours, but a quick call ahead helps us be ready for you.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Quick answers to the things people most often ask. Anything else, just call us on 0121 472 0155 or pop in.

Who can use the Pharmacy First ear infection service?
Children and young people aged 1 to 17 with symptoms of acute otitis media (middle ear infection) can be assessed under NHS Pharmacy First.
Do you have an otoscope?
Yes. We use a clinical otoscope to look inside the ear and check the eardrum, the same instrument a GP would use.
Can adults use this service?
The NHS Pharmacy First ear infection service is currently for ages 1 to 17 only. Adults with ear pain should see their GP, although our pharmacist can offer advice and recommend over-the-counter pain relief in the meantime.
Will my child definitely get antibiotics?
Not necessarily. Many ear infections improve on their own within a few days. We will assess against NICE guidance and only prescribe antibiotics where they are likely to help.
How long does the consultation take?
Usually 15 to 20 minutes. Bring your child in any time during opening hours, or call 0121 472 0155 to let us know you are on your way.
My child seems very unwell — what should I do?
If your child is very drowsy, has a high fever that will not come down, has a stiff neck, a non-blanching rash, or is under 3 months old with any fever, do not come to the pharmacy. Call 999 or NHS 111 immediately.
