High blood pressure rarely has symptoms, which is why getting it checked from time to time matters. We can do that here in five minutes, no GP appointment needed.

If you live or work in Selly Oak, Bournbrook, Bournville or Selly Park and you are 40 or over, your annual blood pressure check is free at the pharmacy — no GP appointment, no waiting list, no fuss.

Who is eligible?

Anyone aged 40 or over who has not had their blood pressure checked in the last six months is eligible for a free NHS check at the pharmacy.

If you are under 40 but have a family history of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or are pregnant, please call ahead and we can usually still help — either as part of the NHS service or as a free walk-in courtesy.

What happens at the check

We will sit with you in our private consultation room. The check itself takes a couple of minutes and is completely painless — a soft cuff around your upper arm that briefly inflates.

  • We measure your blood pressure two or three times to get a reliable reading.
  • We talk through the result with you in plain English.
  • If your reading is high, we may take an ambulatory reading or refer you back to your GP.
  • You leave knowing your numbers and what (if anything) to do next.

If your reading is high

Most slightly raised readings turn out to be temporary — caused by stress, caffeine, having just walked in from outside. We will often offer to take a second reading 10 to 15 minutes later, which is usually different.

If your reading is consistently high, we will write to your GP with the result. The GP may ask you to come back for further checks or arrange a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM), which is the gold-standard test.

Selly Pharmacy can also fit ABPM monitors directly under the NHS scheme — your GP can refer you, or we can liaise with the surgery.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Quick answers to the things people most often ask. Anything else, just call us on 0121 472 0155 or pop in.

Who can have a free NHS blood pressure check?
Anyone aged 40 and over who has not had a blood pressure check in the last 6 months and does not already have a diagnosis of high blood pressure. Adults under 40 with a clinical reason (family history, symptoms) can also be assessed at the pharmacist's discretion.
How long does a blood pressure check take?
About 10 to 15 minutes. We take a reading, explain the result, and if it is high we may take a second reading or arrange ambulatory monitoring.
What is ambulatory blood pressure monitoring?
If your in-pharmacy reading is high, we may give you a small monitor to wear for 24 hours. It takes readings throughout the day and night to give a more accurate picture. You return it the next day and we send the results to your GP.
Do I need to fast or avoid caffeine?
It helps to avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking for 30 minutes before your check. Otherwise, no preparation is needed.
What happens if my blood pressure is high?
We explain what the numbers mean, give you self-care advice, and where appropriate refer you to your GP for follow-up. We can also do ambulatory monitoring on the spot.
Is the service free?
Yes, completely free under the NHS for eligible patients.
