Emergency contraception is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex — ideally within 72 hours, though some options work up to 120 hours later. We offer both NHS and private routes, with no awkward questions.

If you are a University of Birmingham student or local resident in Selly Oak, you can walk in to Selly Pharmacy on Bristol Road for confidential, same-day emergency contraception. We are open six days a week and you do not need an appointment.

NHS or private?

Birmingham CCG funds free NHS emergency contraception for many patients through participating community pharmacies. We offer this service. You may be eligible for the free NHS route based on age and circumstances — we will check at the consultation.

  • NHS route: free, confidential, available to eligible patients aged 13+.
  • Private route: available to anyone, same day, with consultation. Ulipristal acetate (ellaOne) and levonorgestrel both available.

How soon should I come in?

Sooner is better. Levonorgestrel (the 'standard' morning after pill) works best within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Ulipristal acetate (ellaOne) works up to 120 hours (5 days). After 120 hours, the most effective form of emergency contraception is a copper IUD fitted by a GP or sexual health clinic.

What to expect

Walk in or call ahead. We will see you privately in our consultation room.

The consultation is short — usually 10 to 15 minutes. We will ask a few questions to determine the best option for you and check there is nothing that would make a particular medication unsuitable.

Your privacy

Everything is confidential. There is no judgement and we have heard every situation before. The consultation is in a private room with a closing door.

Frequently asked questions

Will my GP find out?

No. Pharmacy emergency contraception consultations are not shared with your GP unless you specifically ask us to inform them.

How much is the private option?

Pricing for private emergency contraception will be confirmed at consultation. Please call us on 0121 472 0155 for current rates.

Can I get it for someone else?

We always need to see the person who needs the medication, as we have to ask them a few medical questions and check it is suitable for them personally.

What about the IUD?

We do not fit copper IUDs at the pharmacy. For this, contact your GP or Birmingham sexual health services. The IUD is the most effective form of emergency contraception, especially after 5 days.

To book or ask a question, call 0121 472 0155. Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours, but a quick call ahead helps us be ready for you.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Quick answers to the things people most often ask. Anything else, just call us on 0121 472 0155 or pop in.

How quickly can I get the morning after pill?
Walk in any time during opening hours. The consultation is usually 10 to 15 minutes, and you walk out with the medication the same visit.
Is it free?
For eligible patients (most women under 25 in the area, plus other groups), the morning after pill is free under the NHS. We also offer it as a private service for around £20 if you are not eligible for the NHS pathway.
How does the morning after pill work?
It primarily works by delaying ovulation. The two main types are levonorgestrel (effective up to 72 hours after unprotected sex) and ulipristal acetate (effective up to 120 hours / 5 days). Earlier is always better.
Is the consultation private?
Yes. We use our private consultation room. The conversation stays between you and the pharmacist.
What if it has been more than 5 days?
An emergency intrauterine device (IUD) fitted by a sexual health clinic or GP is effective up to 5 days after unprotected sex. We will help you find the nearest service.
Will I be judged?
No. Emergency contraception is a normal part of pharmacy practice and we treat every consultation with respect and without judgement.
