Most insect bites are uncomfortable but harmless. A small number become bacterially infected, particularly if scratched. The Pharmacy First scheme lets us assess and treat these without you needing to see a GP.

Bitten in the local parks (Selly Oak Park, Cannon Hill, the Vale) and the bite has gone red and angry? Walk in to Selly Pharmacy on Bristol Road and we will assess it on the spot.

Who is eligible?

The NHS Pharmacy First infected insect bite service is for:

  • Adults and children aged 1 year and over.
  • With a bite or sting that has become bacterially infected.
  • Where the infection is localised to the bite area.

Signs of infection in a bite

A bite that is becoming infected typically shows:

  • Spreading redness around the bite, larger than a 50p coin.
  • Heat and swelling that increases over 48+ hours after the bite.
  • Pus or a yellow / green discharge.
  • Increasing pain rather than improving itch.
  • Sometimes a fever or feeling generally unwell.

What we will do

The consultation is private and takes about 15 minutes.

  • We examine the bite and surrounding area.
  • We assess for signs of bacterial infection vs normal inflammatory reaction.
  • Where appropriate, we prescribe a course of oral antibiotics.
  • We give you advice on caring for the bite and signs to watch for.

When to seek urgent care

Please call 111 or go to A&E — not the pharmacy — if:

  • The redness is spreading rapidly (drawing a line around it shows visible growth in hours).
  • There are red streaks tracking from the bite up the limb.
  • You feel very unwell, with fever, chills, or shaking.
  • The bite is on the face or in the mouth, especially with swelling.
  • There are signs of an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of lips or tongue, widespread rash) — call 999.

To book or ask a question, call 0121 472 0155. Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours, but a quick call ahead helps us be ready for you.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Quick answers to the things people most often ask. Anything else, just call us on 0121 472 0155 or pop in.

When should I worry about an insect bite?
See a pharmacist or GP if a bite gets more painful, more swollen, hotter, or redder over time, especially if redness spreads outwards, you develop pus, or you start feeling generally unwell.
Who can use this service?
Anyone aged 1 and over with a suspected infected insect bite can be assessed under NHS Pharmacy First.
Will I get antibiotics?
Only if the bite is genuinely infected. Many bites look red and swollen because of a normal allergic reaction, which does not need antibiotics. We will assess and explain.
What about tick bites?
If you have been bitten by a tick, especially in long grass or wooded areas, mention it. We can advise on the early signs of Lyme disease and refer you on if needed.
Is this service free?
Yes. The consultation is free under the NHS. Standard NHS prescription charges apply if antibiotics are prescribed.
How long does the consultation take?
Around 10 minutes. Walk in any time.
