Shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, usually as we get older or when our immune system is run down. Antiviral treatment works best if started within 72 hours of the rash appearing, so timing matters — and the pharmacy is faster than waiting for a GP slot.

Shingles needs treating quickly — the sooner antivirals start, the better. Walk in to Selly Pharmacy on Bristol Road, Selly Oak, or call 0121 472 0155 and we will see you the same day where possible.

Who is eligible?

The NHS Pharmacy First shingles service is for:

  • Adults aged 18 years and over.
  • With a rash and pain consistent with suspected shingles.
  • Where the rash has appeared within the last 7 days (ideally within 72 hours).

What does shingles look like?

Shingles typically presents as:

  • A burning, tingling, or stabbing pain on one side of the body or face.
  • A rash of small fluid-filled blisters that follows a band-like pattern, usually on the chest, abdomen, or face.
  • The rash is on one side only and does not cross the midline.
  • Sometimes a mild fever or feeling generally unwell.

What we will do

The consultation is private and takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

We take a brief history of your symptoms, examine the rash, and confirm whether it is consistent with shingles. Where appropriate, we prescribe a course of antiviral medication (typically aciclovir or valaciclovir) on the spot.

If the rash is on your face or near your eye

Shingles affecting the eye area can lead to complications. If the rash is anywhere on your face — particularly near or in the eye — we will likely refer you to your GP or A&E for urgent assessment by an ophthalmologist, rather than treating in the pharmacy.

Self-care while taking antivirals

Whether antivirals are prescribed or not, the following helps:

  • Paracetamol for pain (or stronger painkillers if your GP advises).
  • Keep the rash clean and dry.
  • Avoid contact with people who have not had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine, especially newborns and immunocompromised people.
  • Loose clothing over the affected area.

To book or ask a question, call 0121 472 0155. Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours, but a quick call ahead helps us be ready for you.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Quick answers to the things people most often ask. Anything else, just call us on 0121 472 0155 or pop in.

Who is eligible for the Pharmacy First shingles service?
Adults aged 18 and over with a new shingles rash that started within the past 7 days. Earlier treatment usually means a better outcome.
Will I be prescribed antivirals?
Where clinically appropriate, yes. Antivirals (such as aciclovir or valaciclovir) work best when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing, but they can still be useful up to 7 days.
Can pregnant or breastfeeding women use this service?
Pregnant patients are generally referred on rather than treated under Pharmacy First. Please tell us at the start of the consultation and we will help you access the right care.
How will I know if it is shingles and not something else?
Shingles typically presents as a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body, usually in a band-like pattern. Our pharmacist will examine the rash and ask about your symptoms to confirm or refer.
Is shingles contagious?
Shingles itself cannot be passed on as shingles, but the virus that causes it (varicella-zoster) can cause chickenpox in someone who has never had it. Avoid contact with pregnant women, newborns, and anyone with a weakened immune system until the rash has fully crusted over.
How long does the consultation take?
About 15 minutes. If antivirals are appropriate, you will leave with them the same day.
